Mark your calendars for April 8-14 because it’s time to appreciate your school’s library and librarian. This day is set aside to honor all school librarians.
From helping students find the resources they need to explaining the Dewey Decimal system, librarians have always been there to help us.
With usually unappreciated work, librarians are constantly having to tend to the needs of us. Just by saying a simple, “Thank you, have a good day,” would truly make your librarian smile.
A librarian is always that one person that sees a ton of students a day and never fails to have a smile on their face—at least the librarians at North Greenville University.
When asked about National Library week, Leslie Brown, a librarian at North Greenville University said, “On the college level I try to focus on National Library week being all year round. Things like finding out what my students are interested in and encouraging them to check out the library.”
She continues by saying, “I really love to meet the students and find out where they are with their majors and interests and see how I can get them interested. If I could turn one non-reading student to a more interested book lover then that’s a win in my book.”
When I was in elementary school, my second-grade teacher gave us coupons for free personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut if we checked books out from the library and read them weekly. Needless to say, I had about two personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut a week for about a year. Now that certainly wasn’t great for my health, but that’s not the point.
The point is that I can still remember my sweet librarian that worked at my elementary school. Although she saw over a hundred kids a day she knew me by name because I would come in often to check out books so I could just sit on those tiny red couches that surrounded Venetucci Elementary school’s library and get lost in the books that I had just checked out.
Don’t get me wrong, the free personal pan pizzas were definitely an added bonus. But as a child, I really enjoyed reading because my school’s librarian would always ask me about the story I was reading and introduce me to other ones too.
