On March 10, 2018, President Donald Trump gave one his most memorable speeches of his term. Trump traveled to Pennsylvania; the city in which he won 20 electoral points in a marginal victory, to give an unscripted speech. Whether one considers onself a Democrat or Republican; an unscripted Donald Trump speech is worth the watch.

Trump’s main topics were North Korea, the evil media, the soft Democratic party and the war on drugs. Many iconic quotes came from this speech including:

  • “I would love to beat Oprah. I know her weakness.”

  • “Lot of evil, lot of bad people…lot of fake media…fake, fake media.” [In reference to Congress.]

  • “I was joking, and I said ‘Huh, President for life, that sounds good. Maybe we’re going to have to try it’ but I’m joking. [Points at production media teams] “Donald Trump with his dictorial’ (not an actual word. He probably meant dictatorial) attitude now wants to be President for life. Fake news!”

  • “African American history has reached the lowest level in history. Then last month it went up a little. Hispanic unemployment is the lowest level in history. Women! We love you! We love you! [Never expounds on women employment.]

  • “Your coal is coming back big, big, big, big.”

Trump’s speech was met with a lot of criticism after he attacked CNN, MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, Maxine Waters, Connor Lamb, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Trump also drew criticism when he seemingly made an argument in support of giving the death penalty to drug-dealers. Lastly, as if there was not enough controversy; is it really a Trump speech if he does not bring up his border wall idea?

Of course, after directly attacking America’s most liberal news source; there is a ton of controversy. Trump’s speech was chock full of non-sequiturs, logical fallacies and grammatical incidents. His vocabulary was lax at best and his sentence structure was negligent. Yet, it connected to the people.

Although Trump’s speech was hardly presidential, it was effective. While Democrats are laughing at his seemingly uneducated rhetoric, he is winning. The reason that Trump was elected was because he was unconventional. He did not have the typical presidential qualms, look or dialect. He was far from being politically correct and said things that most people say in the comfort of their living rooms. Trump became president because he holds the opinions of most middle-class, hard-working souls that make up the majority of America.

The backlash shows that the democratic party is doomed to repeat the same mistakes they made in the 2016 election when they put Clinton against Trump. Democrats still think that people want a presidential president. This is simply not the case.

After Trump’s speech, CNN created a news piece outlining the lies and lack of oratory in the prose. While this may seem like a great idea to point and laugh at the commander in chief’; it’s helping him with his platform. These news sites are highlighting exactly what made him win…his unconventional attitude.  We saw a shift in the 2016 election. The majority of people do not want a politician, they want a real leader. Real in the sense that said leader is not afraid to be himself. They want someone who can say what the entire room of people are thinking. While I may not agree with Trump or his policies, I can at least say he is playing his cards correctly.

The speech was not a good speech. He used a lot of fake statistics, did not go into much detail on anything and jumped from topic to topic choppily. However, this was an effective speech as it catered to his demographic. The simple jargon and language syntax made it feel like you were not talking to a president at all. Rather, it felt as if your middle-aged uncle was on a one-hour rant about the economy. But, that’s what the majority wants: someone who is easy to talk to and easy to understand. This is why Trump is still getting praise and cheers at his rallies: the politically correct politician is no more.
