Be single, mingle and share love this Valentine’s Day
Abigail Welch, Staff writer
Valentines is traditionally a day of romance. There are several theories about its origins, some not very romantic at all. Regardless of how it got started, it is now considered a day of love. But does a day of love have to involve just couples?
Love comes in several types; there are actually eight types of love. While we typically associate the endearing type of love with Valentines Day, lets not forget about affectionate love, brotherly love and yes, even self-love. This does not have to refer to vanity or self-obsession, but the healthy, take care of yourself before you can take care of others, type of love.
Research has shown, that in order to be truly happy and giving to others, you first must be happy with yourself. Proverbs 19:8 states, To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper. So, this Valentines Day, the modern day of love, if you do not have another to be with, you can still celebrate love and do something for yourself or others you care about.
Some ideas for celebrating on your own include: taking a cooking class, sending anonymous cards to your friends thanking them so being so great or taking in a movie that you have been wanting to see. You may start out on your own and end up meeting some friends along the way.
Other popular plans for one may include binge watching your favorite television show, snuggling up with a good book or cleaning out your closet. If you are feeling really ambitious, you could go through your old files, rearrange your apartment, update your bucket list or plan a solo style mini-vacation to escape the daily grind.
Maybe youre not alone, but have some friends to spend the day with. Turn Valentines day into Galentines day. How about a creative painting class? Painting may be just what you need to clear your mind and get creative at the same time. A relaxing spa day is always a hit, and you can throw in a massage to complete the package.
Take the day to enjoy quality time with your family. Make it a family game day. Get some of your favorite snacks and gather around the table for Monopoly, Pictionary or Apples to Apples. Hiking is another fun group activity and it is a chance to take in some fresh air. If you cant find someone else to hike with, take along your dog. If you do not have a dog, then maybe a trip to the humane society is just what you need to express your love on Valentines.
Want to stick with tradition on February 14? Grab yourself some chocolates, a dozen roses and take a nice long bubble bath. If you dont pamper yourself, who will? The point is, be creative, be spontaneous, but do not be sad. Being alone on Valentines Day does not have to mean being lonely on Valentines Day. Take the time to love yourself.
