Church signs: creative, concise or confusing?

Hannah Hurst, Staff Writer

Church signs serve several different purposes, but mostly churches make use of them to post important information for the community such as times of services, dates of upcoming events and also share names of pastors.

A large number of the churches around North Greenville University havent yet converted to electronic signage, meaning that these churches are somewhat limited on the number of characters they can display on a sign. Its not uncommon for churches that still implement signs which need to be changed by hand to fall into three categories: creative, concise and/or confusing.

1. Creative

Churches in this category make use of puns and figurative language in order to catch the eye of drivers passing by. These types of Church signs play with words in order to portray an encouraging message or share a Biblical truth.

This sign by Faith Temple, ironically placed between a valley and a big hill, illustrates a message of hope to Christians.

2. Concise

Churches placed in this category focus their attention on only displaying the most valuable pieces of information using the least amount of space or words. While these types of Church signs might not appear the most eye-catching, they do most efficiently achieve their purpose: to share information.

This sign by Enoree Baptist Church is short and to the point, displaying when and at what time families from the community can join in their worship service.

3. Confusing

Churches within this category either failed to use correct grammar or simply just dont make sense. Improper spacing, lack of commas or merely poor word placement often causes confusing Church signs, some of which you might have to read over a few times to get the message.

This sign by Foothills Baptist Church might be a little more funny than confusing for some. The sign boasts that only 30 minutes after the turkey shoot there will be a hot dog sale fresh turkey hot dogs anyone?
