Women in “male” sports

Rondo Thompson, Associate Writer

Carolina Panthers star quarterback, Cam Newton has came under fire for recent remarks toward a female reporter from the “Charlotte Observer,” Jourdan Rodrigue. Rodrigue asked Newton about how he felt about the physicality of his receivers’ routes. Newton’s response was, “Its funny to hear a female talk about routes. Its funny.”

Once the video of the press conference surfaced, the internet exploded; Newton’s remarks have been seen as “sexiest,” “a shot a all female reporters” and “just wrong.” Newton has even been dropped from multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Dannon.

Whether you agree with the comments or not, the sports world must take note that women have a place in male dominated sports also and that the sports world is expanding and diversifying. San Francisco 49ers have recently hired the NFL’s first female assistant coach Katie Sower. Even the change has reached the NBA, Becky Hammon, in becoming the NBA’s first assistant basketball coach with San Antonio Spurs.
