A new chapter for the Media Center
Wyatt Duncan, Staff Writer
The fall 2017 semester has brought about many changes on North Greenville University’s campus. This semester has not only brought dancing and a new president, Gene Fant, it has also ushered in a new era for NGU’s in-house print shop.
The Media Center was created in 2014, when then-president Jimmy Epting approached Gary Southern with the idea of starting a print center on campus. Southern was hired to be the Media Center’s first director, and has seen the project through since its inception. Southern comments that “Primarily, the function of the Media Center at that point, and [what it] still is today, was to service the university’s printing and marketing needs.” The Media Center still serves that purpose, but also serves the needs of the public. Southern adds that they alsoprovideservices for churches, ministries and small businesses in the area.
With the dawn of the new season at North Greenville, Southern and his team have seized the opportunity to give the Media Center a bit of a remodel. Instead of continuing as NGU’s Media Center, the center’s name has been changed to the PrintHub. “The reason for the change,” Southern says, “is that [the name] Media Center sent a lot of people to the library looking for us.” He notes that many libraries are now being referred to as media centers, and explains that they would like to distinguish themselves from NGU’s on-campus library.
“It was decided that PrintHub better depicted who we are, he said. “It sort of [comes] from the hub of a wheel with a lot of radiate lines” that show the various aspects of what the Print Hub does. “We’re a print shop, but we’re so much more than just a print shop. We do photo restorations, we do graphics for web, email blasts, business cards, brochures, letter heads and direct mail postcards” just to name a few.
The PrintHub employs a staff of three, as well as a student work-study. Timm Artus acts as the PrintHub’s Creative Design Specialist, and Rachel Dew serves as the center’s account executive. Mary Mahan, a sophomore interdisciplinary studies major, currently serves as the PrintHub’s work-study.
“I think the NGU students should use the PrintHub because we’ve worked hard to match or beat the prices available further away— so that will save the average student time and money.” Timm Artus comments. Southern adds that they have worked hard to ensure that all of their prices are “the same or less than what Staples is.”
The PrintHub is located beneath NGU’s School of Theatre, nestled between the Billingsley Theater and Einstein Bros bagel shop. IT is open to all students of North Greenville, and is more than willing to work with students to create the best print possible. The PrintHub is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
