Get ready for a night of laughter and mystery as North Greenville University’s Theatre Department puts on “39 Steps,” a spoof of the 1939 film. The play will run from Feb 16-18 and Feb 23-25 in the Billingsley Theatre

Director Genesis Garza said, “I’d love an audience to be able to come in and just have fun. . . There’s a lot of crazy things going on in the world right now, and laughter quite often can really help bring people together.”

“[It has] a lot of gimmicks, a lot of goofy stuff that just makes you laugh,” said Josh Davis, student technical director.

Based in the 40s, the play is a sort of comedic spy telling, Davis said.

“The idea is that you have five actors playing a whole slew of different characters. . . it’s literally a movie being done on stage,” Garza said.

Garza said it has been both a delight and privilege working with everyone putting together the production.

“It’s been a fantastic group. . . a lot of first timers . . .but they’ve been so dedicated [and] responsible . . .They have really been there the whole stride and working really hard,” Garza said.

Davis said he enjoyed working with David Vierow to build a set that is both safe and works with the comedic tone of the play.

“The best part . . . was figuring out what to do and how to do it with what I had,” Davis said.

Davis said he is interested in seeing how the actors use all the different things they made.
