Over Christmas break, a group of 18 students from North Greenville University spent two weeks working with orphans, prisoners and others in Hoima, Uganda.

The group left on Dec. 28, 2016 and returned on Jan. 10, 2017. While there, the students worked on multiple projects. They helped a children’s home move to a new location, put on a women’s conference for local women, helped a local church with a service and held a vacation Bible school for children in the area.

According to Mykel Scott, a broadcast media major at NGU,  “The main purpose was to serve God and make His name great”

Scott said that one day he had the opportunity to lead worship for a group of 300 prisoners, along with Kenna Babson, another NGU student. At the end of the night, the group saw 65 of the prisoners give their lives to Christ.

The NGU Baptist Student Union sponsored the mission trip. Jody Jennings, the BSU director, coordinated the trip to the area where he and his wife lived from 2003 until 2006.

BSU has been sponsoring trips to this area since 2004.

“[My hope is] that every student would, at a minimum, give consideration to serving on a short-term team throughout their time at North Greenville… I don’t want it to be limited, I want to send as many people as can go. If a student can’t go, I want to provide other opportunities that may work,” Jennings stated when asked about his vision for mission through BSU.

Jennings hopes that students who went on this trip “develop a passion for evangelism because we do a lot of just wide gospel sowing, I want them to be very active in sharing the message of Christ with as many people as possible while they’re in Uganda.”

There is another trip planned to Hoima in May 2017. Any students who are interested in going on a trip through BSU can go by the Campus Ministries office in the student center for more information.
