Due to hostility surrounding North Carolina’sHB2 Bill (House Bill), the NCAA men’s basketball tournament has been moved to Upstate, South Carolina. The games were originally supposed to take place in Greensboro, N.C. , until the North Carolina bill providing for single-sex bathrooms was passed.

Venues across the nation were pushing to have the games hosted in their arena.  One venue was The Palestra, located on the University of Pennsylvania campus that holds up to 9,000 attendees. The NCAA decided against the venue and allowed Bon Secours Wellness Arena, of Greenville, S.C. to host the tournament. The Bon Secours Wellness Arena allows nearly 16,000 attendees.

Greenville was only eligible as a venue after Nikki Haley, South Carolina’s Governor, signed a bill that brought down the Confederate flag from the state house in 2015.  The action on the flag being removed lifted the ban of championship events in South Carolina. The last championship South Carolina hosted was in 2002.

The championship will take place at Bon Secours Wellness Arena starting Friday, March 17, 2017.
