On Oct. 7, 2016, Hurricane Matthew made landfall in the continental United States as a category 3 hurricane. The storm continued up the U.S. coast, finally dissipating on the ninth over North Carolina.
In preparation for the storm, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina declared states of emergency and urged citizens to evacuate. It is estimated that over 350,000 people evacuated from the South Carolina Coastal area.
