Free things to do in Greenville
Georgia Gay, Assistant Editor
When a group of broke college students get together to have a good time, it is usually preferable to find something free to do. It can be hard to find something to do in good ol’ Tigerville, so most students make their way towards Greenville. The streets are filled with excitement and there is something to do around every corner. When it comes to finding something to do for free, it can be a little hard. However, something cost-effective is out there and waiting for those who want to make the most of a good time.
1. Mice on Main
Now, this may sound silly to a bunch of college kids, but if they’re with the right people, it can actually be very fun. Mice on Main is a scavenger hunt for statues of mice all throughout downtown Greenville. A list of clues can be found either online at miceonmain.com or in the Mast General Store. This list sends participants on a wild mouse chase all throughout downtown. Divide in to teams of two and make it a competition. The possibilities are limitless.
2. Swamp Rabbit Trail
This 21-mile trail runs throughout downtown Greenville and connects businesses, restaurants and shops into Travelers Rest. This trail can be used for running, walking, biking and so much more. According to greenvillerec.com, not only does it attract over 500,000 users, it raised $6.7 million in tourist revenues just last year. So take a group of friends, strap on your helmets and shoes and set off on the trail.
3. Falls Park
One of the biggest attractions in downtown Greenville would have to be the notorious Falls Park. With the beautiful waterfall that cascades down into the Reedy River and the open spaces perfect for picnics and Frisbee, there is always something to do. When the sun sets and the stars come out, the park comes to life. The bridge that runs through the middle of the park lights up and creates a serene atmosphere. So everyone pile up into the car and prepare for a magical time.
4. Humane Society
What could be more relaxing than spending time with puppies and kittens that want love and attention? The Greenville Humane Society always welcomes visitors with both smiling faces and waggling tails. Animals can be found all throughout the building and are desperate for a pet and snuggle. Make sure to take time to relax and get away from the stresses of school and find a cute critter to befriend. The Humane Society hours can be found at http://www.greenvillehumane.com/.
5. Moonlight Movie
Under the stars of Falls Park, a classic movie can be found. People have secured the perfect spot with a blanket and gather around as the film is about to start. This activity is perfect for a group of students who want a couple of hours of distraction. Just grab your friends, a snack or two and claim the best spot. The movies start at sunset and dates and titles for movies can be found at http://www.greenvillesc.gov/210/Fidelity-Moonlight-Movies.
6. Miniature Golf at McPherson Park
This quaint park can be found in downtown Greenville on E Park Avenue. It offers two playgrounds for those looking to get in touch with their childish side, a tennis court and a miniature golf course consisting of 18 holes. You have to bring your own golf balls and putter, but the course is absolutely free. Challenge your friends to a round or two and let the fun begin.
7. The Art Cellar
This tucked away art corner can be found on S Main Street in downtown Greenville. The location will be moving sometime this month to North Main Street. They offer art that anyone can view or even purchase. This is the perfect spot to see what local artists have to offer and marvel at the talented people in Greenville. For all you art lovers out there, this is a great place to find inspiration and maybe even a place that will one-day showcase your artwork.
