8 gift ideas for graduating seniors

Lane Koch, Associate Writer

Every spring the flowers bloom, ODEL majors decide shoes are no longer necessary and seniors graduate.

Seniors can be a lot of help to the student body, specifically the younger students. They showed you where your classes were, what professors to avoid, what classes to take and what cultural events you should skip. They mentored you in this stage of your life.

Now they are moving on to another stage and into the real world. Some of you will stay in contact for the rest of your lives. Either way, you want to thank them for the role they played in your life. You have to find an awesome graduation present. Here are some ideas:

You have taken trips on breaks, weekends and late nights. Get your friends together and take one last trip or night out. Make a few more memories before they graduate.

You can never go wrong with a nice watch or bracelet. Maybe even engrave a note. Anything monogrammed will do if they’re into that kind of thing.

I mean they are going into the workforce. They will need some sort of professional case. Why not be the one to provide a case that looks like something out of the show Mad Men? Or maybe just a decent laptop case that isn’t frayed all over.

Restaurant Gift Cards

They are entering a whole new world with bills and rent and, best of all, no cafeteria food. Only problem is, the only thing they can make is ramen noodles seasoned with hot sauce and a glass of grape juice they got at Dollar General.  It might not be a bad idea to get a senior some gift cards so they don’t starve or burn their new apartment down.

Memory Book

You are both going to get older and memories get a little blurry as you age. Write down all the best stories and memories. Add some pictures of them that you got while they were blissfully unaware. Fill it with quotes and other cool thoughts and memories.

Make a video of all the pictures and videos of you and your senior. Add sappy or exciting music, depending on the mood. Send it to them or burn it on a CD. Make sure they can always return to it. Don’t forget to add pics of graduation.

Inspirational Book

Seniors are entering the real world and with that come stress, anxiety and excitement. They will make mistakes and they will fall — we all fall. There are a lot of books out there that are written to inspire, encourage and provide wisdom to people in this particular stage of their life.

A full tank of gas

If none of these ideas are working for you, don’t underestimate the joy of a full tank of gas. Just one less time having to fill up the tank might be the best thing you can do to thank your senior.

Whatever gift you decide on, make sure it fits them and shows them how much you care. You don’t have to go big for the perfect gift. If you can get them to remember the times you both spent together, the gift is perfect.

A special thanks to the seniors that got me through my freshman year.
Congratulations seniors and don’t forget us when you are out there changing the world.
