Red ink and oxford commas: A farewell from the managing editor

Carlee Colvard, Managing Editor

It all started with a paper — once white with some black words, then almost completely red from an editor’s pen. This was my first article I wrote my freshman year.

To me The Vision means growth. From seeing how I’ve grown as a writer to watching other people make that progress as well, I have loved being the managing editor and watching people perfect their skills and do things they never thought possible.

When I first joined freshman year, I became part of what was called the Skyliner. This involved staying up late to lay out a newspaper and picking up the paper from a sketchy little town. Little did the university know we journalists practically risked our lives for the sake of our readers. Well, it wasn’t so bad, but you get the point.

Under the leadership of Karyn Campbell and probably all the coffee she consumed in the process, the Skyliner evolved from a paper publication to the online medium it is today. She has been such an inspiration and encouragement to me as a student and that is one of the things I’m going to miss the most.

Other than seeing people grow in their skills and The Vision grow into what it is today, my most treasured moments working for The Vision have been to see the growth in fellowship among the writers.

I have made so many valuable friendships. What could have been extremely boring meetings were the moments I looked forward to throughout the week. From coming up with story ideas to creating conversation as we edited all the articles, my time with my friends was never taken for granted.

Moving up into my senior year and later into the big world of editors and designers, I’m thankful for The Vision and its impact on my academic endeavors.

Thank you to all who have helped me along the way, made my papers bleed with ink and encouraged me when I didn’t want to get rid of an oxford comma.
