Virtual reality systems: the future of gaming?

Patrick Brown, Associate Writer

There are always advances in the world of gaming. However, there has never been a change that revolutionizes the way gamers visualize the experience. Introducing the virtual reality system. This system doesn’t look like anything special, in fact some people say it looks like a pair of ski goggles, but it sure is shaking things up in the gaming world.

The virtual reality system is considered the future of gaming because it makes the game come alive before the gamer’s eyes. When gamers put the virtual reality system on, they are immersed entirely in the world of video games. Gamers can turn their heads to the right and see everything that is on the right. The system gives gamers more control of what they can see in the game.

The cool thing about the virtual reality system is the fact that it is not just for video games. It is also being used for some YouTube videos as well. Many of the videos have been posted to Facebook or YouTube and capture 360 degrees of the shot. When people put the virtual reality system on, they are able to watch those videos just like they would play the game. Only this way, the user can see everything surrounding the shot and more.

Some companies are using the virtual reality system for more than video and video games. Excedrin used the virtual reality system to cause migraines to people who don’t have them in order to see how they felt afterwards. Experiments like these are just a start in the way virtual reality systems can be used. Companies and researchers have the power to test things that could lead to some amazing discoveries.

A lot of people have wondered and questioned why we need this type of equipment in our lives.

Allen Ellis, a sophomore broadcast media major at North Greenville University, said that he was one of those critics as well.

“I didn’t understand the need for them,” Ellis said,”but after I tried one on at NRB, I was blown away with the product.”

Ellis said he was pleased with the system and could see himself getting one for himself soon.

He does not have to wait long as many companies are quickly jumping on the bandwagon for this type of technology. HTC, Oculus and Sony are all on board, making their own virtual reality systems that have already been released to the public. Only time will tell how important this type of technology will be for us in the future, but it has to be a step in the right direction.
