Reasons to celebrate: Holidays that should be on your calendar

Lane Koch, Associate Writer

We all love holidays. Whether it is for the traditions, the spirit or the days we get off from school or work, we all need a date to look forward to celebrating. So here are some extra reasons to celebrate.

Unfortunately, you may not get off work or get to sleep in for these dates, but at least they’ll keep you entertained until Easter.

March 18 – Awkward Moments Day

Some of us choose to celebrate this holiday every time we step out of the door. This day celebrates all the awkward dances, embarrassing mishaps and mortifying miscommunications that we haven’t had a chance to laugh at or, maybe, haven’t wanted to. Get your friends together and share those embarrassing moments you have tried to forget about. It’s time to laugh at yourself.

March 20 – World Storytelling Day

Remember when you were a kid sitting criss-cross applesauce on the floor listening to your teacher read books or sitting in your grandparent’s lap and listening to them tell you stories? Well, this holiday celebrates the beauty of the forgotten oral tradition. Those hoping to observe this holiday are encouraged to listen to stories from other cultures and enjoy participating in a tradition that is ingrained into who we are. Call up your elders or mentors and listen to their stories. Maybe even find someone younger and tell them a few of your own.

March 25 – Tolkien/ Waffle Day

This day got double booked, so that means double the celebration. Celebrate the genius of J.R.R Tolkien by enjoying “The Lord of the Rings” series or any of his other writings. If you aren’t much of a reader, marathon the movies with your friends. If that isn’t your style, take a trip to Waffle House and enjoy Waffle Day. Make sure to add pecans.

March 26 – Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

Maybe none of these holidays appeal to you and that’s okay because there is a day to make up your own. Think of something you enjoy that is underrated or underappreciated and find a way to celebrate it with your friends.

March 30 – Take a Walk in the Park Day

It’s warming up outside and you know what that means—time to go to the park. Take a trip to Falls Park with friends and have a picnic, play some Frisbee, read a book or, best of all, take a stroll.
