8 Super Bowl Snacks on a College Budget
Emily Artus, Staff Writer
While staying on a college budget, North Greenville University students can whip up eight snacks for the 2016 Super Bowl.
Caramel and Chocolate Popcorn
This easy snack is entirely microwaveable and costs only $3.
Pick up a box of popcorn, chocolate chips and a bag of caramels from the Dollar Tree. Pop a few popcorn bags and melt the caramel and chocolate in a microwave-safe bowls.
Drizzle popcorn with melted caramel and chocolate.
Pigs-in-a-Blanket
Costing around $6, this classic Super Bowl food only needs two ingredients: crescent rolls and mini hotdogs.
However, baking this snack calls for an oven, so find a full kitchen at a friend’s house off campus and follow this recipe.
Chocolate Pretzels
Using Dollar Tree chocolate chips and pretzels, this recipe costs only $2.
Melt chocolate chips and dip pretzels in the sauce. Chill in the fridge on a flat surface, preferably lined with wax paper.
These sweet and salty munchies will hardly make it out of the first quarter.
Nachos
This classic snack fits most college budgets, costing around $8 or less.
Melt blocks of Velveeta and any add-ins to make a cheese dip.
Stack tortilla chips around the queso on a platter and serve immediately.
Caramel Apple Slices
This is the least expensive snack on this list, costing only $1.
Simply buy a bag of caramels from the Dollar Tree, and fill a take-out box from the caf with five Granny Smith apples.
Dip sliced apples in melted caramel and chill in the fridge on wax paper.
Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches
This sweet snack costs about $7 and a few extra minutes to make.
Grab a tub of vanilla ice cream and a package of cookies. Scoop the ice cream between two cookies and chill them in a freezer.
For an added touch, dunk the sandwich in warm chocolate or sprinkles.
This dessert is a great finish for savory Super Bowl snacks.
Party Mix
Party mix costs around $4 and can be mixed in a variety of ways.
The Dollar Tree offers trail mix staples such as pretzels, peanuts and raisins.
However, creativity is key when browsing the aisles for ingredients, so try mixing in nacho-flavored chips, oyster crackers or sunflower seeds.

Buffalo Wings
This snack is the list’s most expensive item, but for many, wings are a Super Bowl essential.
Restaurants like Zaxby’s cater trays of wings, but at $42.99 for a base-level tray, catering falls outside most college budgets.
Pick up frozen or deli counter wings from the supermarket for a cheaper option.
“Flash bang wings! You only have to eat a few, and you’re good,” said Tre Pizarro, a freshman health and wellness major.
Flash bang wings are made with an incredibly spicy sauce, but a similar snack can be made college-accessible with fried chicken wings and a coat of hot sauce, such as sriracha.
