Poetry Night
Devan Trout, Staff Writer
Poetry night is a semester event where faculty and students gather to express themselves openly and sip Starbucks whether they are presenting or not.
This once-a-semester event will be at the Hayes Ministry Center Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. to midnight.
It is a drop by event and it is not mandatory that you stay all four hours. The North Greenville Honors Society is hosting this event as a means to support literature and the arts.
People will be able to sign up to present their poetry once they arrive at the event.
You get to hear people present their work, that they wouldnt let people normally see, said Joshua Springs.
Springs will be presenting a poem during the event.
It gets to this point where it gets really raw, essentially sharing their heart and soul through poems, said Springs.
Poetry night is sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, the International Honors Society. No faculty reside over the event. The event is for students, by students.
Katie Baker is the president and Monica Poteat is the vice president of Sigma Tau Delta.
I think it is a great time for students to come together in a stress free atmosphere and then have the opportunity to share their talents,” Baker said. “There is no pressure and it is a friendly environment. It’s an awesome break from the stresses of school.
“To me poetry night is a great way to shine a light on the importance of literature as an art,” Poteat said. “This event gives the opportunity to allow our student body to express themselves through the beautiful style of a poem as well as musical instruments and many more art forms.”
Sigma Tau Delta is an English honor society for students at accredited school that grant baccalaureate or higher degrees.
This honor society was established in 1924 and is dedicated to fostering literacy and all other aspects of English.
