On Thursday, Oct. 1, army veteran Chris Mintz helped stop the shooter on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Mintz, 30, kept students from leaving the classroom and prevented the shooter from entering the room. Mintz suffered seven gunshot wounds and broke both of his legs. Now wheelchair bound, it will be a while before Mintz will walk again. A GoFundMe account was started by his cousin to help with Mintz’ medical bills. The account has already reached $760,000.
NASA released over 8,400 photos of the moon and the earth. Photos from missions to the moon during the 1960s and 1970s were released by Kipp Teague on a Flickr account called the Project Apollo Archive. According to the BBC, there should be up to 13,000 photos from space by the end of the week.
Local/State
South Carolina experienced historic levels of rain and flooding over the weekend, with over 24 inches of rain falling over a three day period. Some areas of Columbia received 17 inches over a 17 hour period, leaving over 30,000 people without power. Ten counties have declared states of emergencies and more have imposed a curfew. Floods should subside and recovery work should begin by the end of the week.
Greenville’s local hockey team has changed its name. Since 2010, Greenville’s minor league hockey team has gone by the name ‘Road Warriors,’ but beginning this season, the team will be known as the ‘Swamp Rabbits.’ The rebranding is part of the team’s efforts to weave themselves into the fabric of the community, according to general manager Chris Lewis. The Swamp Rabbits will play for the first time Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. in a intra-squad scrimmage at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Campus
Next week is Homecoming week. Starting Wednesday, Oct. 14, NGU will looking back and celebrating its past with a variety of games, tournaments and other activities. There will be corn-hole, ping pong, and capture the flag tournaments. On Friday, there will be an outdoor concert, pep rally and bonfire. Saturday will wrap up the activities with The Crusaders Parade and a football game against Tusculum College.
Thursday, Oct. 8, the theatre department will be holding the first improv night of the semester. Starting at 8:30 p.m. in Hamlin Recital Hall, improv night will feature many new faces and new games that promise to deliver a night of great acting and entertainment.
Unusual
Chase Dellwo, a 26-year-old bow hunter, was hunting with his brother in Montana when he was mauled by a bear. Dellwo survived by sticking his arm down the bear’s throat. “I remembered an article that my grandmother gave me a long time ago that said large animals have bad gag reflexes,” Dwello stated. By taking his grandmothers’ advice, Dwello will make a full recovery.
Pepsi is paying tribute to Back to the Future II this October by releasing a limited edition version of Pepsi that was featured in the 1989 film. Pepsi Perfect will be made with real sugar and will come in bottles just like the ones seen in the movie. There will only be 6,500 bottles produced and released on Oct. 21, the same date that Marty arrived in the future in the film. Each bottle will cost $20.15.
