Track teams springboard into outdoor season
Shattered. This single word tells what the North Greenville University track and field team is doing to school records this season.
The teams have exceeded the expectations of all conference foes this season as they have asserted themselves as some of the best in Conference Carolinas.
The men’s team was picked to finish fourth in the indoor track season, and exceeded expectations, nearly winning the conference championship.
The charge was led by freshman Terry Davis, who was named Freshman of the Year for the indoor track season. Davis placed second in his first ever collegeiate track meet at the Bob Pollack Invitational.
This was merely the beginning for Davis, who would go on to take home the conference championship in the triple jump, flying a distance of 46 feet, 4.75 inches.
He would take the second place in the high jump later that day, clearing a height of 6 feet, 4.75 inches, eight inches short of taking the title.
In his third event of the day, Davis would finish third in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, .075 inches.
On the women’s side, the team was picked to finish sixth of the eight teams in conference.
Once again, the Crusaders exceeded expectations, finishing fourth in the Indoor Conference Championships.
The team proved that it was a force to be reckoned with, especially in the pole vault competition, taking the top two positions in the competitions.
Freshmen Megan Goodson and Zoe Engwall led the charge in this event, tying for first place with jumps of 10 feet, a foot and half higher than any other competitior in the event.
Both teams transitioned into the outdoor season, beginning with the 49er Classic in Charlotte and Powersox Invitational at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Sophomore Ahmad Nesbitt set a school record in the 5K run with a time of 14:52 at the 49ers Classic.
Davis broke records in the Powersox Invitational, taking the triple jump title and setting a school record with a jump of 47 feet, 5.25 inches.
Fellow freshman Antonio Hipps finished second in the triple jump, flying 44’ 5.5”.
On the women’s side, the 4×400 relay team of Engwall, sophomore Ambria Shaw, junior Shiobhan Fraser and junior Georgia Delts broke the school record at Lenoir-Rhyne.
The relay team recorded a second place finish in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 12.46 seconds.
Engwall also won the women’s 800 meter race with a final time of 2:26.94.
Goodson and Engwall continued their dominance in the pole vault event, taking first and second place, respectively.
Fraser won the women’s triple jump, flying a distance of 36 feet .25 inches, barely edging Tiana Mills of Carson-Newman.
In the upcoming stretch for the Crusaders, the teams will travel to Wofford College for the Terrier Relays. Following the trip to Spartanburg, the teams will travel to Columbia, S.C. and Furman University in the final events before the outdoor Conference Carolinas Championships.
The teams finish the season in Charlottesville, Va. for the UVA Invitational, a chance to prove themselves against Division I opponents.
